Nick Petrov is a private investigator famous for finding missing persons, but he can't track 15-year-old Amanda because her identity has completely vanished from his memory after he suffered a seizure. Petrov is forced to put together jumbled clues: was that hole in his jacket really created by a buzzard eating at his arm? Why is there a photograph of strangers on his kitchen counter? What about the $450 check in his name from a woman he doesn't remember? As his memory starts to return, and the mystery of Amanda's disappearance unfolds, Petrov realizes that some things are best left forgotten. Abrahams's ("The Tutor") 14th thriller features a fast-paced plot and rich characterization reminiscent of Elmore Leonard, although with slightly smoother edges. Strongly recommended for most popular fiction collections. [See Prepub Alert, "LJ "12/04.] -Ken Bolton, Cornell Univ. Lib., Ithaca, NY
