The nineteenth century was rife with museums of "curiosities"--some of which can still be seen in the Enlightenment Room in the British Museum--and this book celebrates these historical oddities. The book is divided into 14 parts, including ""Curious Americana,"" ""Fantastic Beasts,"" ""Unbelievable Stunts,"" ""Strange Literature,"" ""Uncanny People,"" and ""Wartime Wonders."" Each part includes between 4 and 15 entries, and each entry is 1- or 2-pages long. The writing is engaging and very accessible, with entries written as if telling stories to the reader. This results in colorful tales that cover such curiosities as George Washington's brooch of his and Martha's hair, a nineteenth-century trained pig in Ireland, the appearance of a ghostly Roman army in the plumbing of an old English mansion, and the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel (which did not result in the financial windfall she planned for). A few black-and-white images dot the text. Information sources and an index conclude the volume. Readers will enjoy browsing through this book to find out improbable but fascinating tidbits of history.
