An instant New York Times bestseller!

"Sharp, stylish and stunning...Foley's best yet." — Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of All the Colors of the Dark

"It is an absolute bonkers delight (and I haven't even mentioned the local bird cult yet ...)." — NPR, Best Books of the Year

Secrets. Lies. Murder. Let the festivities begin...

It's the opening night of The Manor, the newest and hottest luxury resort, and no expense, small or large, has been spared. The infinity pool sparkles; the "Manor Mule" cocktail (grapefruit, ginger, vodka, and a dash of CBD oil) is being poured with a heavy hand. Everyone is wearing linen.

But under the burning midsummer sun, darkness stirs. Old friends and enemies circulate among the guests. Just outside the Manor's immaculately kept grounds, an ancient forest bristles with secrets. And it's not too long before the local police are called. Turns out the past has crashed the party, with deadly results.

THE GIRLBOSS · THE HUSBAND · THE KITCHEN HELP · THE MYSTERY GUEST

Everyone's got a secret. Everyone's got an agenda. But not everyone will survive...The Midnight Feast

"Foley's usual techniques of unraveling the central mystery through multiple timelines and narrators are paralleled by the spiraling events of the weekend, which careen from juice shots and yoga on the lawn to a chaotic climax at a hallucinogen-fueled bacchanal where hidden identities and multiple murders are brought to light. It is an absolute bonkers delight" — NPR

Foley’s scintillating latest (after The Paris Apartment) centers on the grand opening of a resort in the English village of Tome. Francesca Meadows, who summered in Tome as a child, has teamed with her celebrity architect husband, Owen Dacre, to build an ultra-chic retreat called the Manor. Their plans have angered some locals, who believe the Manor will encroach on sacred woodlands populated, according to folklore, by supernatural creatures known as the Birds. Despite protests, the Manor opens its doors for a summer solstice celebration. Attendees include Francesca’s twin brothers, Hugo and Oscar, and Bella Springfield, a mysterious woman who seems to know Francesca from her childhood visits to the village. In the run-up to the opening celebration’s marquee event, a bacchanalian midnight feast, the guests’ past connections and secret motives come to light. The next morning, a dead body is discovered on the resort’s grounds, and a question hangs in the air: is there a killer in the Manor’s midst, or have the Birds taken their revenge? While keeping track of the book’s five different narrators can be challenging, the chilling folk horror atmosphere and sucker-punch surprises more than compensate for any temporary confusion. Readers are in for a grisly treat. Agent: Alexandra Machinist, CAA.

From the author of The Paris Apartment (2022) and The Hunting Party (2019) comes a tantalizing riff on the classic locked-room mystery. A new, upscale resort known as the Manor is open for business. A handful of guests are soaking up the luxury. . . when a murder is committed. The circumstances are, to put it mildly, unusual, and it isn't long before the Manor's guests begin to feel that something isn't right--that something dark is coming into the light. The book (which is being adapted for television) isn't precisely a horror story, but it's very much horror-adjacent. It's definitely a bit of something new from Foley; in much the same way that she shifted gears from historical fiction to contemporary thrillers, Foley seems to have shifted gears again, adding in a supernatural element. True to her prowess as an author, the new angle works splendidly: this is a chilling, exciting, and hugely satisfying novel.

The Midnight Feast is set at The Manor, a brand-spanking-new countryside retreat that has opened on the Dorset Coast. Set against the backdrop of an ancient wood, guests gather for the opening of The Manor, but old friends and enemies are leaping out of the shadows. It is here that secrets and the dark history of The Manor and the woods become intertwined in a dark way. This plot sets the scene for a perfect mystery. From the very beginning, the story builds with a sense of unease and ambiguity that kept me on the edge of my seat but still glued to the page, frantically wanting for answers. It may be slow in terms of build-up and pacing, but it works because this style of storytelling ramps up the tension and suspense in a way that is truly petrifying. The character work is also great, with a set-up that felt indicative of the way authors such as Agatha Christie would introduce characters as suspects. Each has secrets and compelling backstories, which add to the entertainment value of the book as you never know who to trust. Most importantly, the mystery is aided by the setting, vivid descriptions and atmosphere. Chilling, terrifying and filled with spine-tingling tension, The Midnight Feast is everything you want from crime fiction. It delivers a terrific sense of atmosphere, a nail-biting sense of suspense that builds with the ominous tone, and great pacing and plotting. It kept me guessing right until the very end. Foley’s well-crafted scene-setting completely absorbed me in the story. The gothic and dark descriptions sent shivers down my spine, making for an enthralling good time.
