NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • READ WITH JENNA BOOK CLUB PICK AS FEATURED ON TODAY • Three estranged siblings return to their family home in New York after their beloved sister’s death in this “deeply nuanced and compelling” (Vogue) novel, from the acclaimed author of Cleopatra and Frankenstein.

“A beautiful portrait of grief and the world-shaping bond sisters share.”—Real Simple
A VOGUE AND HARPER’S BAZAAR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR
The three Blue sisters are exceptional—and exceptionally different. Avery, the eldest and a recovering heroin addict turned strait-laced lawyer, lives with her wife in London; Bonnie, a former boxer, works as a bouncer in Los Angeles following a devastating defeat; and Lucky, the youngest, models in Paris while trying to outrun her hard-partying ways. They also had a fourth sister, Nicky, whose unexpected death left the family reeling. A year later, as they each navigate grief, addiction, and ambition, they find they must return to New York to stop the sale of the apartment they were raised in.
But coming home is never as easy as it seems. As the sisters reckon with the disappointments of their childhood and the loss of the only person who held them together, they realize that the greatest secrets they’ve been keeping might not have been from one another but from themselves.
Imbued with Coco Mellors’s signature combination of humor and heart, Blue Sisters is a story of what it takes to keep living after loss—and, ultimately, to fall in love with life again.

Mellors (Cleopatra and Frankenstein) delves into sibling drama with this frank and soulful offering. The four Blue sisters form a tight bond while sharing a bedroom in the family’s New York City apartment and dealing with their domineering, alcoholic father and aloof mother. They remain close after leaving home, until Nicky, the second youngest, dies at 27. On the first anniversary of Nicky’s death, the surviving sisters learn their parents are selling their childhood home, and reunite at the apartment. Avery, the oldest at 33 and a successful lawyer in London, has taken to hiding her smoking and shoplifting habits from her wife. Thirty-one-year-old Bonnie, a retired boxer, works as a bouncer in Venice Beach, Calif., while former model Lucky, 26, can barely through the day without drinking. As the siblings dredge up old wounds and regrets about Nicky, a kindhearted teacher who lived with all-consuming pain from endometriosis, they’re brought together by their enduring love for one another, even as they judge each other for how their lives have spiraled. Mellors draws each of the characters distinctly, including Nicky, who comes to life via the others’ memories. This story of addiction and grief will resonate with readers. Mellors's (Cleopatra and Frankenstein) compelling tale follows three estranged siblings returning to their family home in New York after the tragic death of their beloved sister, Nicky. Eldest sister Avery is a London-based lawyer who's recovering from a heroin addiction. Middle sister Bonnie, a former boxer, now works as a bouncer in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the youngest sister, Lucky, is pursuing a modeling career in Paris, but her alcohol- and drug-fueled lifestyle is beginning to take a toll. When their mother informs them that she's selling the family home, the sisters reunite at the apartment. There, they confront the disappointments of their childhood, facing their collective mourning and the secrets of the past. Kit Griffiths narrates, and though her pacing is a bit laborious, she ably embodies each of the sisters. Griffiths excels at capturing the intensity of the sisters' relationships and the sorrow, frustration, and anger that fuel their interactions. VERDICT Mellors crafts a poignant narrative that explores what it means to move on after loss. Considering the weight of grief, sisterhood, and addiction, this powerful listen is recommended for those who enjoyed Claire Lombardo's The Most Fun We Ever Had.--Susan McClellan

Grief is a looming presence in this audiobook. The three Blue sisters try to move on after the death of Nikki, their vivacious and beloved fourth sibling. Kit Griffiths narrates the sisters' parallel stories with a measured cadence, adopting a stiff, halting pace that might echo the survivors' internal and external struggles as they wrestle with the past and try to salvage their futures. Overall, Griffiths offers a strong narrative voice, but she keeps the listener at a distance. Some accents are well performed, but the sisters' New York City accents miss the mark, and awkward pronunciations become distracting. Dialogue often lacks distinctive characterization. The audiobook is best described as uneven but compelling enough to keep listening. L.B.F. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine

After loving Mellor’s debut, Cleopatra & Frankenstein, I was eager to tuck into her new book, Blue Sisters. The story follows the three remaining Blue sisters – Avery, Bonnie and Lucky – in the wake of their sister Nicky’s untimely death. Each chapter follows a different sister. We are given a window into their lives as they all engage in self-destructive behaviour while grappling with grief. The story grapples with some heavy themes around addiction, grief, and a level of emotional abuse, but there are moments of humour and lightness, sprinkled throughout. It was wonderful to be immersed in Mellor’s writing again, as she has a unique turn of phrase and knack for metaphor. Although this book lacked the depth and pace I was hoping for. It is a character-driven novel and, while we get a good sense of who each sister is, I still felt like there was a part of them I didn’t know. The sibling dynamics of a large family are portrayed well, particularly between the eldest and youngest – the shifting allyship among them will be relatable to anyone who comes from a family of three or more siblings. I enjoyed learning about the sisters’ childhoods and past, each of their experiences different and distinct from the next. It wasn’t a story I thought about when I wasn’t reading and it left me wanting a bit more, but I think Mellor’s debut was a hard act to follow.
